Japan has a history of pop idols like Hatsune Miku who are topping the charts. But Hatsune Miku (Performance of Hatsune Miku below) is unlike your average pop-star we have the United States, she is a CG animated singer. This trend is increasing and has come a lot further than you father's Alvin and the Chipmunks.
With technology today you can create a star with only the talent of a designer, a copy of auto-tunes and budget of a mega label. Just imagine an icon for young girls that can't get a DUI, be seen on a celebrity sex tape or photographed snorting coke off of a toilet stall at the local Denny's.
Recently the idea has been taken one step further; Made example by the recent coming out of singer Aimi Eguchi from the Japanese band AKB48. The coming reveled that she wasn't a real 16 year old girl but a CG animated fake made up of different elements from the other members of the group.
This was a shock to the fans of the group.
